Stretching the Silence

Being able to sit still, in silence is a capacity that grows with practice. Like a muscle that must be trained with use, we become better able at quieting our hearts and minds as we do it over and over again.

This experiment is about stretching our ability to keep silence. Begin with just a minute or two. Set a timer, and then still yourself. Quiet yourself. Allow the thoughts that come into your mind to pass—it’s okay if they come, but as they do, acknowledge them and send them on their way instead of obsessing over them.

Over the process of a week or so, add a minute to your timer each day. Stretch the silence. Stretch out your capacity to be still and quiet.

As you reflect on this experiment, ask, “What is my real capacity for silence? What obstacle stands in my way?”
